Why do single people pay extra single supplement for travelling alone?

I understand if you want to occupy a double, that's fair enough, but when single rooms are generally small and poly why should we be penalised for travelling alone? I would have thought that it is in the companies interest to give single travellers an incentive to travel alone. After all we are valid customers too!!
