Why do I feel sorry for elderly people?

Whenever I see an elderly person sitting by themselves it makes me want to cry because i think that they're lonely and want a friend. Or if i see them want something at a store and they don't have it, it makes me upset for them. I think awww he only wanted that muffin... or something... I always find myself getting upset with elderly people everywhere i go. Why is this?
