Does anyone know the history of broth - the traditional soup made with left-overs or given to invalids?

Broth is the name of a type of soup usually made by boiling Meat, Fish or Vegetables in water. It is Old English and is related to the Old Norse "Broth" and Old High German "brod- brodein", To boil.
